Wing Yip
This is an exciting project for HG Construction - the development for the Chinese food wholesaler/retailer W Wing Yip whose head office is in Birmingham with wholesale/retail outlets in various areas of the UK.
The brief
The Edgware Road development consists of a new warehouse and retail building, plus offices and a restaurant. It incorporated some very interesting features, including green glazed roof tiles which are installed by a specialist Chinese roof tiler.
What we did
The basic construction of the roof is far more complicated than European roofs in as much as they impose a weight loading in excess of three times more.
The roofs consist of felt, two layers of tile batten laid on a counter pattern grid, flat tiles laid in vertical ribbons extending down the roof and then overlaid with semi circular capping bedded on mortar spanning the joints.
On the curved hips are a series of cast figures the first of which is a large horned dragon which looks down upon the smaller figures of a phoenix, a lion and a fairy astride a chicken. The fairy offers protection to the building and its occupants.
The results
The entire contract was completed in July 2008 over an 84 week period.
