Mental healthcare reprovision works for Grosvenor House Group and Kent & Medway NHS Social Care Partnership Trust.

The brief

Provide a 20 bed Learning Disabilities Unit; a 20 bed unit for the frail and elderly; a 12 bed Rehabilitation Unit and a 16 bed Addiction Unit together with external works and services linking to the existing facilities.

This project was procured under the Government's PFI initiative with HG Construction carrying out a full Design & Build scope of duties.

What we did

The project was generally constructed by traditional methods, using concrete foundations, masonry elevations with raised seam metal roofs and other claddings. Internally prefabricated ensuite bathroom units were installed with other innovative services and fittings.

All works were carried out in the grounds of an existing working hospital and consequently great attention was paid to traffic movement, pedestrian circulation and protection of boundaries of individual sites.

The result

We received positive feedback from users of the facilities;

"I feel privileged to have the opportunity to work on such a good unit."  - Senior Manager

"The only problem is that the Clients won't want to go home." - Staff Member

"This unit offers all that we hoped for and more." - Patient Representative

"The whole building is amazing and the feedback from our Clients and their families is nothing but glowing in its praise of its look and general facilities. Clients comment on the fantastic entrance.....the brightness of the unit, having such a large courtyard right in the centre of the unit and.....all their rooms being ensuite. I am proud as a manager to be showing other professionals round.......and feel the building demonstrates that the NHS can provide top class facilities for people with drug and alcohol problems." - Addiction Unit Manager
